Searching for old Lowell Banjo & Fiddle Contest Winners!
We're working on a benefit show for the venerable contest to be held on
TUESDAY, AUGUST 18TH at Johnny D's, Davis Square, Somerville, MA
Sponsored by Sandy's Music and Alex Demas.
And we'd like to invite old contest winners to perform! We need to raise money to keep this contest going, and your presence and cover charge will help keep it going! This should be a hoot! Anyway, we'd love to have a "parade of winners" perform in the style of the old contest to draw people to the benefit show, and frankly, it'd be a lot of fun! Old-time, Bluegrass, Ethnic, Banjo, Fiddle, whatever! So... do you know the whereabouts of old Lowell winners?? Please contact me (or have them contact me) at jon@planetbanjo.com and we'll try to organize something. We'd need to know what year, what category, what prize, etc. If you have suggestions on how to organize this, I'd love to hear them! I don't want to exclude anyone, but of course, time is limited. I'm thinking that we'd start with any first place winners that emerge, followed by second place winners, and so forth, till we run out of time. Rumor is that Martin Grosswendt and Larry Unger with Eden MacAdam-Somer, and Dave Palmater will be there, too! So this will be pretty big, if my guess is right. Please help spread the word, and save the date yourselves, this is an important benefit show. I'm thinking that a fifteen dollar cover would be a fun contribution, even for the performers... but again, we're open to suggestion. You'll hear more about this, I'm sure. Please help!! Sincerely, Jon, Sandy, Alex Demas, and the gang.
From our good friend and mentor, Geoff Bartley, this coming Sunday!! I can attest to the great food and music... Geoff's there every Sunday, but this one is special, as you can see... please go support the blues, and a GREAT eatery in Brighton, right near the Greenbriar...

EVENT DATE: FRIDAY JULY 3, BRATTLEBORO, VT.
AL BERARD CAJUN COMBO
Louisiana's Grammy nominated Cajun musician Al Berard, and his "Cajun Combo", making their only Vermont appearance, will bring a new expression of Cajun music from spicy to sublime, to "The Church", 3 Grove St., downtown Brattleboro VT on Friday, July 3 at 8PM immediately following Gallery Walk. The event is both a concert with seating space and dance with a fine hardwood floor in the hall used regularly for dance concerts.
The trio will perform the heart and soul of Cajun music's best traditional melodies of two-steps and waltzes, played string-style featuring twin fiddles, twin mandolins, and authentic French vocals. The stringed family combinations, lets listeners taste the flavor and fully hear the beauty of these timeless songs that come from a people of living history in Southwest Louisiana.
Musical director and fiddler/mandolinist, Al Berard, CFMA's fiddler of the year, brings the authenticity of being born and raised a bilingual-speaking Cajun and native son of Louisiana. He has been playing traditional French Cajun music all his life and enjoys sharing both the music, and anecdotal stories of his home and his culture with his audiences, as he has done all over the world for 30 years. Mark Trichka (mandolins, guitar) and Lisa Brande (fiddle, octave mandolin, guitar, vocals), both part-time Louisiana and Vermont residents, and full time touring musicians for over 20 years, add texture and depth to Al's musical expressions. More information about the group can be found on their cajuncombo.com website.
